Falls Lions Finish With a Flurish - 5/12/10

The Oconto Falls Lions wrapped up their calendar of regular meetings for the year with a flourish on Wednesday, May 12 when they inducted two new members, Bob Patenaude and Mike Salscheider. Club President Taryn Nall’s two year term as president was coming to an end on June 30th with a positive growth in membership for the club, among a number of other accomplishments. Typically the club has regular meetings from September to May, with special activities during the summer months instead of regular meetings. The May meeting was the last in the annual rotation at the Mill Sports Bar and Grill where the Lions were very pleased with the great service from the Mill staff.

Zone Chair Jon Makuck inducted the new members providing a history of Lions International as each of the new members and their sponsors listened intently. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the entire membership of the club gave their support with a nice round of applause as they welcomed the new members into the club. With the upcoming community celebration at Memorial Field, the help of the new members will be greatly appreciated as the club mans the food stand at Memorial Park for the four day Memorial Day Celebration.

Lions Present 2010 Scholarships - 5/12/10

The May 12 Oconto Falls High School scholarship program featured a great variety of awards from local, regional, and national funders. One of the early presentations featured Oconto Falls Lions Club President Taryn Nall (pictured on the left) as he congratulated Kristen Schlorf (center) and Bryce Iverson (right.) The Lions are involved in supporting a number of community projects and scholarships are one category that they especially favor since the scholarships can be a great investment in young people.

The Oconto Falls Lions continued the tradition as they partnered with a number of other community organizations in the Memorial Day weekend celebration at Memorial Field in Oconto Falls. The Lions have learned to specialize in what they do best and when it comes to Memorial Field, that means brats, burgers, and hot dogs, along with a few of the trimmings. The Lions staffed the four day celebration starting on Friday night through the conclusion on Monday afternoon, well after the last parade unit had been parked and the last softball player had rounded the bases.

(Picture 1) Adding a new dimension this year was a little extra staffing from the newly formed Oconto Falls Lioness Club. Lioness Michelle Grenke (center) teamed up with Dick Jahnke (left) and Tom Yogerst (right) to handle the customer service counter for some of Saturday’s crowd.

(Picture 2) One of the Sunday crews included a combination of veteran burger flippers and some brand new guys learning the tricks of the trade that have made the Lions food stand so popular at Memorial Field. Left to right were Marshall Senn, new member Doug Nowak, Jim Damp, Mark Mortell, and new members Mike Salscheider, and Bob Patenaude. By the end of the shift, the three new guys could flip burgers with the best of them.

(Picture 3) The Monday parade always brings in the biggest crowd and the corresponding need for a crew heavy with veterans. Pictured left to right were Buzz Kamke, Doug Olson, Dave Polashek, Bill Trible, Jim Patenaude, Dan Moore, and new comer Matt Steffens. The lion on the shelf overlooking things was the quality control guy that afternoon.

(Picture 4) Not all of the Lions were on duty at Memorial Field. One was perched high on the Lions float as it worked its way along the down town parade route. It was a great day for the parade and the Lions, whether working the food stand or riding high on the float were glad to be part of the celebration.
